Chess

Chess.....never learned to play/never paid any attention/never really cared. Today, my 8 year old grandson announces that he belonged to Chess Club at school and did I want to play?!?!
He's staying with us for a few days; but rainy, cloudy weather means no swimming or the park......so off we went to the Dollar Store to buy a chess set.
After two hours engaged with this game and this little guy, my
brain is loving the feeling of something new and challenging!

There were no instructions with the $ box, so he carefully talked his way through, telling me the names of each piece, the various moves and giving me a "do over" when I made a bad decision!
Serendipity......that happy, unexpected pleasure that touches your soul and makes your heart happy! I am delighted to have learned something new (who knows how much I'll recall come tomorrow) .....but mostly tickled that this sweet, baseball ready, wii champ, trivia expert and perpetually-in-motion boy.....put on his teaching cap and taught this ol' gal a new trick!

  1. What fun to be learning from your grandson! We all need a challenge and I'm sure chess would be that for me. I've been teaching my five year old grandson checkers on my iPad. He's learning fast!

    1. The older ones now play on Ipads.....as well as so much more! Luckily they still love the closet full of boardgames...old fashion, but a lifetime skill for sure!

    1. Oh thank you! He's a delight for sure. Grandsons are different than granddaughters...but for now he still lets me cuddle and spoil him!

    1. Thank you! He's so patient with me......and chess is VERY difficult in my opinion! But I've noticed he asks for checkers or Scrabble lately.....I may be a lost cause!
