Vacationing with Grandkids

Middle of the sizzling summertime and I’m planning a winter vacation to NYC!   We’re committed to taking each of our five grandkids on a trip of their choosing…..and now it’s our second granddaughter’s turn! My Flower begins eighth grade this fall….perfect age to research and explore what she wants to see and do. It actually feels good to think about ice skating at Rockefeller Center right now! AND…..I’ll get to wear the boots and winter gear I bought when we took our oldest to Alaska!

After climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge several years ago, I vowed to share this experience with my Sunshine girl as soon as she was old enough! When the time came two years ago, she very sweetly asked, “instead of Australia, is it okay if we go to Alaska instead?”  As an animal lover living on the beach in So Cal……she was curious about this harsh, snowy environment and totally smitten with Alaskan Huskies. It was one of the states we’d never visited…..full of history and a great place for a “doing” adventure! Top of the list was dog sledding……like a magic carpet hovering above the snow and whisking us through the silent, white meadows again and again!  Not only did she mush……she was able to harness the dogs prior to our rides…..and hold the puppies that would soon be trained!  Early April…..still very wintertime in Alaska. We spent the other days hiking mountain trails, cruising in the Gulf of Alaska and touring behind-the-scenes at the SeaLife Center.

So…………….now NYC during the holidays! We’re definitely planning on The Lion King, Lady Liberty, FAO Schwarz, the 9/11 Memorial, and of course, the ice rink!  We love the idea of seeing the holiday themed streets, parks and store windows…….as only the City can do! Always stylish… she’ll LOVE the shopping! And luckily, not only does she enjoy a good meal, but readily tries new foods! How lucky for us.....bring on the eating opportunities!
The younger ones can’t wait till their turn……“will you climb the Great Wall of China with me, Grandma?”  “Can we go to Africa and ride a camel?”   These from the preschoolers!
I’m thinking “dude ranch in Montana or Wyoming? Mississippi River cruise?” No takers yet…...but in another 3-6 years….they will know!

I want them all to choose what captures their imagination and curiosity, savor their time with me and embrace the joys of travel.  Just hope I’ll be able to keep up with them by then. LOL

Our Kids As Parents

Arriving in terminal 1 at LAX…..the grandgirls and I first off the plane…..quickly heading to the escalator……up ahead through the double doors wait Mom and Dad, bending over to see up as we all lean down to wave to them.  And suddenly there they are……. all wrapped up in a bear hug in my Son’s arms!

Arriving with 4th of July cupcakes to visit the little ones…….and there in the middle of the pool is my Daughter with three munchkins surrounding her! One on her shoulders, one hanging on her back and one doing flips in front……but I see and hear only her…..whooping and laughing with joy and delight as they perform again and again!

These are the moments only captured by the heart……..but it is something more….internal, maternal and eternal. It’s a smile coming from the soul……and the strong feelings of love and admiration for these two as I watch them parent their own children.   Thanks go to God….. and to my husband…..what an amazing  job we did, huh!?  We are forever parents …… and the sense of accomplishment and pride just keeps growing!
